The new High Commissioner of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia His Excellency Mr. Mohamed Fayaz has presented his Letter of Credence to the King of Malaysia the Yang di Pertuan Agong XIV, His Majesty Al Mu’tasimu Billahi Muhibbuddin Tuanku Alhaj Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Ibni Almarhum Sultan Badlishah today. During the ceremony held at the National Palace, Istana Negara, the High Commissioner conveyed the goodwill and greetings of His Excellency President Yameen Abdul GAyoom and the people of Maldives to His Majesty the King, the Government and the people of Malaysia.

Commending the Malaysian leadership the High Commissioner stated that the country’s leaders have “transformed the country to a prosperous urban and industrialised nation that serves as examples to its Asian neighbours and to the rest of the world. [And] The rapid developmental progress attained by Malaysia serves as testimony to the vision of its Government and the fortitude of its people.” Continuing his remarks the High Commissioner noted that over the last few years Malaysia has become a home-away-from-home for a large number of Maldivians and that in this regard, the Government was working towards easing the existing bilateral visa regime. To this effect, the High Commissioner expressed his confidence in receiving the kind support of His Majesty the King and extended an invitation to the Yang d-Pertuan to visit the Maldives at a convenient time.

In his remarks His Majesty the King highlighted that Malaysia and the Maldives have been enjoying warm and close bilateral relations since its establishment in 1968 and that indeed “the two countries have undertaken concerted efforts towards expanding the scope and dimension of bilateral relations”. “Malaysia remains firmly committed in efforts to strengthen the close bilateral ties with Maldives [and] we see plenty of potential and scope abound for both countries to expand relations in the context of joint aspirations to achieve rapid social and economic development”, said His Majesty.

Today’s ceremony was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia His Excellency Dato’ Sri Anifah Haj Aman. The Minister at the High Commission Ms. Liusha Zahir and Counsellor Mr. Hassan Khalid also accompanied the High Commissioner today’s ceremony.
