Arrests

The High Commission has a role in offering appropriate assistance to Maldivians who are detained or arrested in Malaysia. However, as a foreign diplomatic mission, there are certain limitations to what we can do.

Foreigners in Malaysia are subject to local laws. Therefore, you should be aware of Malaysian laws and must abide by them at all times. Not knowing the local laws is not an excuse.

While Malaysia is a multicultural society, it is also predominantly a Muslim country. As a Maldivian you are probably aware of religious sensitivities that may be prevalent in Malaysia. Muslims may also be subject to Shari’a law while in Malaysia.

Hence, you should try to avoid any situations which might put you at risk. If, however, you are arrested, the following FAQs provide information on consular assistance that the High Commission can provide to you.
